JustPics – The best Facebook Photo app on iPhone

Are you one of the thousands of iPhone/ iPod Touch users out there who wonder why you can’t view the latest photos from your Facebook friends in a stunning cover flow?? Well, if the answer is yes, there is great news! Aditi Technologies has introduced JustPics that allows you to do just that, and a whole lot more. Let’s take a quick look at what makes JustPics such a compelling app for any iPhone/ iPod Touch user.

Features

  • View latest photos from all your Facebook friends, or even individual friends
  • Mark photos as favorite
  • Choose friends whose latest photos you wish to see on the cover flow
  • View tags and comments
  • Comment on photos
  • View photos uploaded by you
  • Share photos with your Facebook friends

While JustPics is available for $1.99 in iTunes, there’s also the free version JustPics Lite, with some minor limitations compared to the paid version. Let’s take a quick look at the differences –

  • While the Lite version allows for only up to five photos to be marked as favorite, there is no restriction in the paid version.
  • The Lite only shows you the latest set of photos uploaded by your friends and you. The paid version allows you to view the latest photos, and also to drill down to the older ones.
  • The Lite version doesn’t allow you to choose which friends’ photos you see on the cover flow. JustPics allows for this.
  • The Lite doesn’t allow you to remove a friend (locally in the app) through an individual photo. The paid version allows you to do that.
  • The Lite version doesn’t allow you to view the latest photos by friend. JustPics provides this feature.

We would love to hear from you on how you find the app, and how we can make it better. Please send your feedback and suggestions to appdev@aditi.com.

Emerging Mobile Markets

With the global mobile markets emerging and by the end of 2009, mobile subscriptions surpassing nearly four billion across the world, there are a lot of places in the world which are emerging as hot spot for mobile business in the world. Especially a lot of traction is being seen in Asian countries due to many countries emerging as developed nations from developing nations. Competition between various mobile network operators is increasing to grab these emerging market and many of these operators are improving their strategy and execution plans. To ensure sustained success, most of these Telecomm service providers are concentrating towards the mobile content and applications for the obvious reason, billion dollar business!!.

Asia has a lot of small but growing markets with significant potential and to cater the needs of these markets service providers are doing much more than just providing basic voice and SMS services. And to add to this competition is emergence of Smart phones. This makes service providers compulsory to avail the most of the basic services such as Ringtones, simple games, weather, sports and news services. India, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam are some of the Asian countries which are seen as the most appealing countries by investors, but the country which is drawing much more attention is Indonesia.

Indonesia is one of the emerging mobile markets in Asia. Indonesia has nearly 240 million population but the mobile penetration in Indonesia is comparatively higher and close to 50%. The Indonesian market holds huge potential for mobile services and the effect of which is, many Indonesian network operators and content providers are aligning themselves to grab competitive Indonesian mobile services market and coming up with long term aggressive strategy to hold them.

The content and applications market in Indonesia is currently immature and represents a very small part of the mobile market. But the service providers are seeing a lot of traction for content applications in Indonesian market. Development of a regulated, balanced and effective value chain is looked upon as one of the key factors for content services in Indonesia.

Indonesia's Giant service providers:

  1. Telkomsel is the leading Cellular service provider with 50% market share in Indonesia.
  2. XL also known as PT XL Axiata Tbk is second largest cellular service provider and has 31 million (nearly 40% of Telkomsel) subscribers.

These two companies are coming up with a lot of aggressive strategies and investing dollars on various mobile and content applications. But these are not the only players, a lot of other players who are aggressive on their market strategies and have already started digging into content services domain. Some of them are Indosat, Telkom, Natrindo.

Setting up the infrastructure and positioning itself with the new market trend will be a difficult task for many service providers due to a lot of limitation put on by mobile web applications and browser (Small screen size,Lack of Javascript and cookies, Speed, Broken pages, Location of mobile user) but looking at market trend and billion dollar business, emerging markets will have to quickly fix up these things.

RIM launches NEW BlackBerry Development Tools

Research In Motion has the day before yesterday (06 April, 2010) officially press released the newly improved Java and web-development tools for its BlackBerry operating system. The BlackBerry® Java Plug-In for Eclipse v1.1, the BlackBerry® Web Plug-in v2.0 and the BlackBerry Java SDK v5.0 offer new capabilities that make it even easier to create feature-rich applications. According to RIM, these tools provide access to more than 20,000 APIs that allow developers to build both application and widgets that can interact with core functionality, and even other third-party applications.

The press release covers all of the details in terms of what was launched. Here is some additional views/information I learnt while crawling which I would like to share-

1) Avoid Simulator Reset while development - Using the new simulators provided in the BlackBerry Java SDK v5.0 you no longer need to reset your simulator every time you update your application, which helps makes it faster and easier to write your applications.

2) BlackBerry Eclipse plugin was needed to better fit the Eclipse working model. BlackBerry Java Plug-In v1.1 for Eclipse claims to be easier for existing Eclipse developers to get started building BlackBerry applications and make use of the plug-in even more intuitive than before.

3) BlackBerry Java SDK v5.0 has gone live bringing all 5.0 API’s for extensive developer community. They have created new UI, Location etc API’s to help developer make easy rich applications.

4) BlackBerry smartphone applications can now be debug automatically by loading on a BlackBerry smartphone.

5) Project properties can be defined in a BlackBerry smartphone application descriptor file. XML-based files enable easy maintenance and tracking of changes using a source control system.

6) It supports multiple BlackBerry smartphone OS versions within a workspace for reduced development time and cleaner project organization.

7) You can now import sample applications or BlackBerry® Java® Development Environment (BlackBerry JDE) based projects into a workspace through a wizard to reduce your development lifecycle.

The BlackBerry JDE Plug-in for Eclipse v1.0 will be available for download until July 15, 2010. On October 5, 2010, the BlackBerry JDE Plug-in for Eclipse v1.0 will no longer be supported.

Some of the useful features offered by the use of BlackBerry JDE Plug-in for Eclipse 1.0 are as-

- Enables one to write, test and compile Java ME applications that run on BlackBerry smartphones
- Simulates the entire end-to-end online and offline user experience of a broad range of BlackBerry smartphones from your desktop
- Features the integration of key Java Specification Requests (JSRs), enabling you to take advantage of the latest Java ME developments in creating a superior mobile application
- Allows you to take advantage of the unique strengths of developing for the BlackBerry platform, including: native applications integration, push applications etc

Social Networking with Location flavors

There has been quite a lot of buzz in the web world about location based services and social networking. Foursquare and Gowalla are two start-ups which have been successful in creating a lot of positive noise and buzz by combining the social network to the location of the users.

FourSquare: Foursquare is essentially a social networking game with location as an important parameter. The game lets you earn points and get badges. The user earns points when he starts to put in his location. The user’s friend can recommend place for him in and around the area. Now by earning points the user can became a “Mayor” of a place. When the user becomes the Mayor, he is eligible for freebies in that location. So in this way FourSquare is hooking users and corporations to jump into the application. What’s more FourSquare has opened its APIs to developers to create more innovative apps on its platform.

Gowalla: This is essentially the same as Foursquare, but it has started a little bit late across locations when compared to Foursquare. Even Gowalla has its API’s exposed.

Loopt and Bright kite: Essentially both these products let the users search for friends with their location and lets the users search and explore for new places and meet new people. Both these have not been able to create the same buzz as Foursquare as there is no incentive for the user to use the application.

These small organizations are big-steps towards localized social networking. These companies are bringing and creating new business models with location specific revenues. This in turn will change many things in emerging and price sensitive markets such as India. . On the high level these may be just fun apps, but they are very significant as they may prove to be game changers.

  • Developers will create more innovative apps which will generate money for the different app markets

  • Business will change the way their products are sold and marketed. Business will have a better understanding of their target market since a mobile is the most personalized device any one could have.

  • Lastly it will definitely change the way the consumers live.
